Midtown is located in the center of San Antonio, bordered by Hildebrand Avenue to the north, Highway 281 to the east, I-10 to the west and I-35 to the south. The area consists of nine neighborhoods comprising one of the most historic areas in San Antonio. Each neighborhood is unique in its demographics and architectural style. Beacon Hill, one of the first “modern platted” subdivisions in San Antonio, is a working class neighborhood with Victorian-style houses lining its streets. Five Points is a burgeoning area with an upwardly mobile middle-class, while Monte Vista consists of an established upper-middle class demographic. The homes in Monte Vista vary in style from French Eclectic to Neoclassical to Italian Renaissance.
Beacon Hill
Beacon Hill has a population of approximately 4,600 with a median age of 33. The average annual household income of Beacon Hill residents is $48,731. There is an estimated 2,220 homes in the area with a median cost of $95,750. Beacon Hill has been recognized as an area that is undergoing massive restoration. Recently, there has been a community-wide effort to restore the neighborhood’s historic homes to their original grandeur.
Monte Vista
Unlike Beacon Hill, homes in Monte Vista are relatively expensive at a median price of $272,915. Monte Vista is the largest historical district in the United States and was designated an historical landmark in 1998. The area is home to approximately 3,000 people with a median age of 36.4 and a annual median income of $54,340.
Many of the houses in Monte Vista are very large and date back to San Antonio’s Gilded Age (the period between 1890 and 1930). Queen Anne, Prairie, Tudor and Spanish Colonial Revival-style homes represent the architecture of the neighborhood. Residents in the area enjoy a variety of budget-friendly restaurants located only 1.5 miles from downtown San Antonio.
